How to Nominate a Pharmacy for Your NHS Prescription

Nominating a pharmacy makes it easier to receive your NHS medicines. Instead of collecting a paper prescription from your GP and taking it to a pharmacy, your prescription can be sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose. This system is called the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and, when available at your GP practice, it helps streamline the whole process.

The information below applies to NHS prescriptions in England and does not replace advice from your GP or pharmacist.

What Does It Mean to Nominate a Pharmacy?

When you nominate a pharmacy, you give permission for your GP to send your electronic prescriptions directly to that pharmacy each time you need your medicine. As a result:

  • you do not usually need to visit your GP surgery to collect a paper prescription

  • your chosen pharmacy can start preparing your medicines sooner

  • you may be able to use a home-delivery service, if the pharmacy provides one

  • managing repeat prescriptions becomes simpler and more organised

How to Nominate a Pharmacy

Nominating a pharmacy is straightforward. You can follow these steps:

  1. Choose a pharmacy
Decide whether you would like to use a local high-street pharmacy or a registered online pharmacy. If you prefer delivery, check that the pharmacy offers this service and that it suits your needs.

  2. Tell your GP practice or pharmacy
Next, let your GP surgery or preferred pharmacy know that you want to nominate them. You can usually do this in person, by phone, or online through NHS services.

  3. Confirm your nomination
After your details have been updated, your nomination will be recorded on the system used by your GP and by your chosen pharmacy.

  4. Receive your medicines
Once your GP issues a prescription, it is sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy. The pharmacy then prepares your medicines so that you can collect them or, where available, receive them by delivery.

Can You Change Your Nominated Pharmacy?

Yes. You can change or cancel your nomination at any time. Simply contact your GP surgery, speak to your new preferred pharmacy, or use the relevant NHS online service. The change will usually apply to future prescriptions.
