NHS Contraception Service at NewGen Pharmacy
Our GPhC-registered pharmacists provide confidential contraception support, including initiation of contraception, ongoing oral contraception and emergency hormonal contraception (EHC). We help you access safe and effective birth control quickly and conveniently, without needing a GP appointment.
All consultations are private and fully confidential.
What Does the NHS Contraception Service Include?
- Emergency hormonal contraception (EHC): The morning-after pill, used after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It works best when taken as soon as possible
- Ongoing oral contraception: Continued supply of the combined or progesterone-only pill after a pharmacist consultation
- Contraception advice: Clear, professional guidance to help you choose the right option for your needs pls replace contraception advice with initiation of contraception.

All supplies are provided where clinically appropriate, following a consultation with our pharmacist in line with FSRH (Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare) clinical guidelines. If your needs fall outside this service, we will refer you to your GP or a sexual health clinic.

Before Your Consultation — What You Will Need
- Your current weight and height
- A recent blood pressure reading (required before we supply oral contraception)
- A list of your current medicines, including supplements or herbal products
- Relevant medical history (such as migraines, blood clots, liver conditions, or smoking status)
If you do not have a recent blood pressure reading, contact us and we will guide you on how to get one before your consultation.
How Does the Service Work?
- Contact us online, via telephone or get signposted by your general practice, sexual health clinic or equivalent.
- Clinical assessment: Our pharmacist carries out a confidential consultation and reviews your medical history
- Treatment supply: If appropriate, we supply oral contraception or emergency contraception
- Further support: If needed, we refer you to your GP or a sexual health clinic

Important: Emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) is not 100% effective and should not be used as a regular method of contraception. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you are concerned about STIs, contact your local sexual health or GUM clinic.
