What is Mometasone Furoate?
What is generic Mometasone Furoate Monohydrate nasal spray?
Mometasone furoate nasal spray is a steroid (corticosteroid) medicine used in the nose to reduce inflammation (swelling and irritation). It helps to relieve symptoms caused by allergies such as hay fever and perennial rhinitis and can also be used for nasal polyps in adults.
Steroids like mometasone work on the immune system to calm down the inflammatory response that causes allergy symptoms.
What is the difference between Nasonex and generic mometasone?
Both Nasonex and generic mometasone contain the same active ingredient: mometasone furoate.
Because the active ingredient is the same, they have the same strength and work in the same way when used as directed. So, many people can use either option.
The main difference is the brand name and the cost
In most cases, the key difference is price:
Nasonex is the branded product
Generic mometasone is usually lower cost
Even so, both options must meet UK standards for quality and safety.
Why generics are considered equivalent
Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient as the branded product. In addition, manufacturers must meet strict regulatory requirements.
They must show bioequivalence, which means the generic works in the body in the same way as the branded medicine.
How to use
Always follow the instructions in the Patient Information Leaflet or as advised by a clinician or pharmacist.
Typical use:
- Shake the bottle and prime the spray before first use (pump several times until a fine mist appears).
- Blow your nose gently before spraying.
- Insert the nozzle into one nostril and spray while breathing in gently.
- Repeat for the other nostril.
- Generally, 1–2 sprays in each nostril once daily is used for allergies.
- Do not exceed 2 sprays per nostril in 24 hours unless advised by a clinician.
Tips:
- If you skip a dose, use the next one at the usual time. Do not double up.
- If the spray has not been used for a while (e.g., 14 days), reprime by spraying into the air until a uniform mist appears.

Hay Fever Information
Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) is an allergic reaction caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mould or fungal spores that causes inflammation of the inside of the nose. It’s a very common condition, estimated to affect around 1 in every 5 people in the UK.
Allergic rhinitis typically causes cold-like symptoms, such as sneezing, itchiness and a blocked or runny nose. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn’t caused by a virus.
