Opatanol
What is Opatanol?

Opatanol is a branded eye drop solution containing the active ingredient olopatadine hydrochloride, an antihistamine and anti-allergy medicine designed for eye use only. It reduces allergic reactions in the eyes by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical your body produces during allergic responses.

What Is It Used For?

Opatanol is used to treat the signs and symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, such as:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Redness
  • Swelling of the surface of the eye
These symptoms are commonly caused by allergens like pollen, dust or animal fur.
How Should I Use It?

Follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist exactly.

  • Wash your hands before use.
  • Instil one drop in each affected eye, twice a day (about 8 hours apart).
  • Avoid touching your eye or eyelids with the dropper tip to prevent contamination.
  • If using other eye medicines, leave at least 5 minutes between treatments, and apply ointments last.
  • Put the cap back on immediately after use.
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose, do not double-up.

Contact lenses:
Remove soft contact lenses before using Opatanol. Wait at least 15 minutes after application before reinserting them, because the preservative in the drops (benzalkonium chloride) can be absorbed by lenses and cause irritation or discolouration.

When can I expect to see results?

Relief from symptoms will usually occur within 24 hours. If more than 72 hours have passed without symptom relief then an alternative diagnosis should be considered.

For best results, the drops should be used every day through your hay fever season. It is safe to use the drops for up to 4 months at a time without a break.

What is allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is the name given to eye inflammation caused by allergies, such as hay fever.

This inflammation causes itching, redness and watering. It can also lead to eye discharge, or inflamed, itchy eyelids.

What causes allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is typically triggered by exposure to pollen from trees and flowers, or animal hair and pet dander. These allergens trigger cells within our immune system (mast cells) to release histamine, which leads to irritation.

What treatments are available for allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with anti-allergy drops, like Sodium Cromoglicate or Opatanol.

If you experience additional hay fever or allergy symptoms, such as an itchy throat or runny nose, antihistamine tablets can provide extra relief alongside eye drops.

Age Restrictions
  • Olopatadine Eye Drops are licensed for use in adults and children aged 3 years and older.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children under 3 years have not been established.

What side effects may I experience?

Like all medicines, Opatanol can cause side effects. However, most people tolerate it well. If side effects do happen, they are often mild and short-lived.

Eye-related side effects

Some people may notice:

  • Eye pain or irritation

  • Dry eye or an unusual feeling in the eye

  • Blurred vision

General side effects

You may also experience:

  • Headache

  • Tiredness (fatigue)

  • A bitter or unusual taste

  • A dry nose

Uncommon side effects

Less often, Opatanol may cause:

  • Watery eyes (increased tear production)

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Swollen or red eyelids

  • Dizziness

  • Skin irritation

Stop using the drops and get advice straight away if you develop severe discomfort, worsening symptoms, eye pain, or any change in vision.

Who should not use Opatanol?

Do not use Opatanol if you:

  • Are allergic to olopatadine or any of the other ingredients

  • Are breast-feeding

Precautions before using Opatanol

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using Opatanol if:

  • You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy (a clinician should advise you first)

  • You have dry eyes or damage to the surface of the eye

This matters because benzalkonium chloride (a preservative in the drops) can irritate sensitive eyes.

All medication is sent using non-branded, discreet packaging.
