Opticrom
What is Opticrom?

Opticrom contains the active ingredient sodium cromoglycate, an anti-allergy medicine used in eye drop form to help prevent and relieve symptoms of allergic eye conditions. It works by stopping the release of substances in the eye that trigger allergic inflammation.

How should I use Opticrom?

Follow your healthcare professional’s instructions or the product leaflet:

  1. Wash your hands before use.
  2. Tilt your head back and gently pull the lower eyelid down.
  3. Place one to two drops into each affected eye up to four times a day, or as directed.
  4. Avoid touching your eye with the dropper tip to prevent contamination.
  5. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  6. If you are using other eye medicines, apply Opticrom first and wait at least 5 minutes before other drops.

Do not exceed the recommended dose.

When can I expect to see results?

Opticrom does not work instantly. It is most effective when used regularly and preventively, meaning consistently throughout periods of known allergen exposure (e.g., high pollen days). Some people notice improvement after a few days of regular use, but full benefit builds up over time.

Is There Anybody Who Should Not Use It?

Do NOT use Opticrom if you:

  • Are allergic (hypersensitive) to sodium cromoglycate or any of the other ingredients in the drops.

Precautions:

Before using Opticrom, tell your pharmacist or doctor if you:

  • Have an eye infection or serious eye condition
  • Have dry eye syndrome or corneal problems
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding — talk to a clinician before use, as safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be individually assessed.
What is allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is the name given to eye inflammation caused by allergies, such as hay fever.

This inflammation causes itching, redness and watering. It can also lead to eye discharge, or inflamed, itchy eyelids.

What causes allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is typically triggered by exposure to pollen from trees and flowers, or animal hair and pet dander. These allergens trigger cells within our immune system (mast cells) to release histamine, which leads to irritation.

What treatments are available for allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with anti-allergy drops, like Sodium Cromoglicate or Olopatadine.

If you experience additional hay fever or allergy symptoms, such as an itchy throat or runny nose, antihistamine tablets can provide extra relief alongside eye drops.
