Shingles Treatment — NHS Pharmacy First Service
Experiencing a painful rash on one side of your body? This could be shingles. Our GPhC-registered pharmacists at NewGen Pharmacy can assess your symptoms and supply NHS antiviral treatment where clinically appropriate — without a GP appointment. This service is available for adults aged 18 and over. Early treatment is important: antiviral medicines are most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing
What is Shingles?
Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After having chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in nerve tissue. It can reactivate years later as shingles, causing a painful blistering rash, typically affecting one side of the body or face.
- A burning, shooting, or tingling pain — often before the rash appears
- A red rash developing on one side of the body or face — not crossing the midline
- Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over
- Sensitivity or pain when the skin is touched
- Itching around the rash
- Headache, fever, or feeling generally unwell

Why Early Treatment Matters
- Antiviral medication — such as aciclovir — is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing
- Early treatment can reduce the severity and duration of the illness
- It may help reduce the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia — a complication causing long-term nerve pain
