How it works
Sodium Cromoglicate
What is Sodium Cromoglicate?
Sodium cromoglycate is a medicine in a group called anti-allergics. It is used as eye drops to help prevent and treat allergic eye symptoms, especially those caused by hay fever or other allergens. It works by stopping the release of substances from cells in the eye that trigger allergy symptoms such as itching and redness.
Using Sodium Cromoglicate
How should I use Sodium Cromoglicate?
Always follow the instructions from your healthcare professional or pharmacist.
Typical use for adults and children aged 6 years and older:
- Wash your hands first.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
- Put one or two drops into each eye up to four times a day (or as directed).
- Close your eyes briefly after instilling the drops.
- Do not touch the tip of the bottle to your eye or eyelashes to keep it sterile.
- Soft contact lenses should be removed before use and not reinserted until at least 15 minutes after applying the drops.
Do not stop the drops just because your eyes feel better. If your healthcare professional has told you to use them for a certain period, continue as advised.
When can I expect to see results?
Sodium cromoglycate does not act instantly like some antihistamine eye drops. It works best when used regularly and consistently (up to four times a day). It may take several days to build up its full effect when used for prevention during allergy season.
Allergic Conjunctivitis Information
What is allergic conjunctivitis?
Allergic conjunctivitis is the name given to eye inflammation caused by allergies, such as hay fever.
This inflammation causes itching, redness and watering. It can also lead to eye discharge, or inflamed, itchy eyelids.
What causes allergic conjunctivitis?
Allergic conjunctivitis is typically triggered by exposure to pollen from trees and flowers, or animal hair and pet dander. These allergens trigger cells within our immune system (mast cells) to release histamine, which leads to irritation.
What treatments are available for allergic conjunctivitis?
Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with anti-allergy drops, like Sodium Cromoglicate or Olopatadine.
If you experience additional hay fever or allergy symptoms, such as an itchy throat or runny nose, antihistamine tablets can provide extra relief alongside eye drops.
