Wegovy Pills — what we know so far

Semaglutide is one of the most widely recognised medicines used within weight management services in the UK. It currently exists as the active ingredient in Wegovy, available as a once-weekly injection for eligible patients.

Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These treatments work by acting on areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation and helping to support feelings of fullness.

There is growing interest in whether semaglutide may also become available in an oral (tablet) form for weight management. While this formulation is not currently available in the UK, it is being studied and may offer an additional option for some patients if it becomes licensed.

As with all prescription-only medicines, any future oral semaglutide treatment would only be prescribed following a clinical assessment by a qualified healthcare professional. It would also be used alongside lifestyle measures such as dietary changes, increased physical activity and ongoing support.

A tablet, not a weekly injection

A daily pill that fits your routine

For many people, a simple daily tablet feels more familiar than a weekly injection and slots more easily into work, travel and everyday life. If needles have been holding you back, an oral option could change that — once it's licensed and a prescriber confirms it's suitable for you.

  • Taken by mouth — no needles
  • Once daily, built into your routine
  • Always alongside diet, activity and pharmacist support

Important to know

Is it suitable for everyone?

No. Weight management medicines are not suitable for everyone.

A healthcare professional will always assess whether a treatment is appropriate and safe before prescribing. These medicines are for adults aged 18 and over, and work best as part of a wider programme that includes nutrition, activity and long-term lifestyle support.

Eligibility depends on a range of clinical factors, including:

  • Medical history
  • Current medications
  • Weight-related health conditions
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Individual treatment goals
  • National and local prescribing criteria

All patients receive appropriate counselling on correct use, possible side effects and ongoing monitoring from a healthcare professional. The most appropriate choice depends entirely on individual clinical circumstances and a prescribing assessment — the final decision always lies with the prescriber.

Important information

Weight management medicines are prescription-only medicines and are not suitable for everyone. They must only be prescribed following an assessment by a qualified healthcare professional, and are for adults aged 18 and over.

An oral semaglutide (Wegovy Pills) tablet for weight management is not yet available or licensed in the UK. Joining the waiting list registers your interest only — it is not an order, and no payment is taken. We will only ever offer this treatment once it is properly licensed and a prescriber confirms it is suitable for you.

This page is for general information only and should not be considered medical advice. Individual results vary, and no treatment guarantees specific weight loss outcomes.

If you feel unwell or have urgent health concerns, contact your GP or call NHS 111. In an emergency, always call 999.

Your questions, answered

When will Wegovy Pills be available?
We can't give a firm date yet. An oral (tablet) form of semaglutide for weight management is being studied but is not currently licensed or available in the UK. As soon as it is, people on our waiting list will be among the first to hear.
Does it cost anything to join the list?
No. The waiting list is completely free and commits you to nothing. We don't take any payment — you'd only ever pay after a prescriber has confirmed a treatment is suitable for you and it's available to supply.
Has it been approved by the MHRA?
An oral semaglutide formulation for weight management is awaiting the appropriate UK licensing and regulatory steps. Availability and prescribing criteria should always be confirmed once it becomes available in the UK. We will only ever offer it once it is properly licensed.
How is a tablet different from the injection?
Wegovy is currently given as a once-weekly injection. A tablet form would be taken daily by mouth and may suit people who prefer to avoid injections, but it requires daily adherence. The most suitable option always depends on your individual clinical circumstances.
Can I switch from my current injection to a tablet?
Possibly — but that's a clinical decision. If a tablet becomes available, speak to our prescribers and we'll advise what's right for you based on your health and how you're getting on with your current treatment.
Should I wait, or start a treatment now?
If you're ready to start, our injectable options are available today after a consultation (see "Options available today" above). If you'd rather hold out for a tablet, join the list — there's no harm in doing both, and a prescriber will guide you either way.
How do I join the waiting list?
Just fill in the short form above with your name and email. We'll store your details securely and contact you as soon as Wegovy Pills are licensed and available to request at NewGen. No cost, no obligation, and you can opt out at any time.
