What is Telfast?

What is Telfast?

Telfast is the branded version of Fexofenadine, which is an antihistamine. This reduces the levels of a chemical called histamine that is found naturally in the body, which can lead to redness, swelling and itching during an allergic reaction.

Telfast helps to reduce the symptoms of an allergy and can be used to treat hay fever, conjunctivitis (red, itchy eyes) or eczema. Telfast comes in a 120 mg or 180 mg dose: the 180 mg dosage is recommended for those looking to treat hives (urticaria).

How do I take Telfast?

The recommended dose is to take one tablet once a day. This should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, and ideally before you eat to maximise its effects.

Telfast should start to take effect in 1 hour, and lasts for a total of 24 hours.

Is there anybody who cannot take Telfast?

Telfast is only recommended for children above the age of 12 and adults under the age of 65. It is not recommended for those that have experienced a previous allergy to Telfast, or any of the other ingredients that this is formulated with. It’s recommended not to take Telfast before speaking to your doctor or pharmacist if you have experienced the following:

  • Liver or kidney problems
  • Heart disease or have been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat
  • Pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy

It’s recommended that you always read the patient information leaflet (PIL) of the medicine that you receive before taking it to make sure that this is suitable for you.

Every medicine can cause side effects, but it’s not guaranteed that everyone will experience them.

Common side effects when taking Telfast include a headache, drowsiness, nausea or drowsiness. These usually go away after starting treatment gradually, but if they don’t go away you can speak to your GP or pharmacist for further advice.

If you experience a fast or irregular heartbeat or a severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, blistered or peeling skin) while taking Telfast, stop treatment and contact your doctor straight away. This very rarely happens, but needs to be monitored closely.

Always read the label of any medication that you take and only take according to the instructions provided. Do not exceed the stated dose.
