What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine medicine used to relieve symptoms caused by allergic reactions. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released by the body during an allergic response. This helps to reduce sneezing, runny nose, itching and other allergy symptoms.

How do I take Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is commonly used for:

  • Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) — relief of sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes and itching of the throat or nose.
  • Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) — reducing itchy, red, swollen patches of skin.

It is a non-drowsy antihistamine, meaning it is less likely to make you sleepy compared with older antihistamines. However, some people may still feel tired or sleepy.

How should I use Fexofenadine?

Follow any instructions from your healthcare professional or the product label.

Typical guidance for adults and children aged 12 years and over:

  • 120 mg once daily for hay fever symptoms.
  • 180 mg once daily for chronic urticaria.
  • Take the tablets with water and avoid taking them with fruit juices (e.g. orange, apple, grapefruit) as these can reduce how well the medicine works.

For children aged 6–11 years: tablets or oral suspension may be used with appropriate dosing advice from a clinician or pharmacist.

Do not take more than the recommended dose. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. In that case skip the missed dose.

Is there anybody who cannot take Fexofenadine?

You should not take fexofenadine if you:

  • Are allergic to fexofenadine or any of the ingredients in the medicine.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before taking fexofenadine if you:

  • Have kidney problems — a lower dose may be needed.
  • Are due to have allergy testing, as antihistamines can affect results.
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding — discuss with a clinician first.
Fexofenadine products are licensed for:
  • Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over (e.g. 120 mg or 180 mg once daily).
  • Children aged 6–11 years may use paediatric formulations with appropriate dose guidance.

Fexofenadine is generally not recommended for children under 6 years without clinician advice.
