Olopatadine
What is Olopatadine?

Olopatadine is a medicine formulated as eye drops used to treat the signs and symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, also known as eye allergies. It belongs to a class of medicines that reduce the body’s allergic response in the eyes.

What Is Olopatadine Used For?

Olopatadine eye drops are used to relieve symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis including:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Redness
  • Watery or irritated eyes

They work by reducing the allergic reaction directly in the eye tissues.

How should I use Olopatadine?

Follow the instructions given by your clinician or pharmacist. In general:

  • Wash your hands before use.
  • Use one drop in each affected eye(s), twice daily (about 8 hours apart).
  • Do not let the tip of the bottle touch your eye or lashes to avoid contamination.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • If you are using other eye drops, leave a few minutes between each different medicine to prevent them washing each other out.
When can I expect to see results?

Relief from symptoms will usually occur within 24 hours. If more than 72 hours have passed without symptom relief then an alternative diagnosis should be considered.

For best results, the drops should be used every day through your hay fever season. It is safe to use the drops for up to 4 months at a time without a break.

What is allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is the name given to eye inflammation caused by allergies, such as hay fever.

This inflammation causes itching, redness and watering. It can also lead to eye discharge, or inflamed, itchy eyelids.

What causes allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is typically triggered by exposure to pollen from trees and flowers, or animal hair and pet dander. These allergens trigger cells within our immune system (mast cells) to release histamine, which leads to irritation.

What treatments are available for allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with anti-allergy drops, like Sodium Cromoglicate or Olopatadine.

If you experience additional hay fever or allergy symptoms, such as an itchy throat or runny nose, antihistamine tablets can provide extra relief alongside eye drops.

Age Restrictions
  • Olopatadine Eye Drops are licensed for use in adults and children aged 3 years and older.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children under 3 years have not been established.

Follow these steps to reduce irritation and improve safety:

  • Remove contact lenses before use. Then wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.

  • Speak to a healthcare professional if you have dry eyes or corneal problems.

    • This matters because preservatives (such as benzalkonium chloride) can irritate sensitive eyes.
