What is Beconase?
What is Beconase?
Beconase is a nasal spray that contains beclometasone dipropionate, which is a corticosteroid (steroid) medicine. Because it works directly in the nose, it reduces inflammation linked to allergies. As a result, it can help ease symptoms by reducing swelling and irritation in the nasal lining.
What is Beconase used for?
Beconase is used to prevent and treat allergic rhinitis, including:
Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)
Year-round allergic rhinitis, for example allergy to dust mites or pets
In turn, it may help relieve symptoms such as:
A blocked or runny nose
Sneezing
An itchy nose
General nasal discomfort
What side effects may I experience?
Like all medicines, Beconase can cause side effects; however, not everyone gets them.
Common side effects include:
Dryness or irritation inside the nose
Sneezing after use
Nosebleeds
An unpleasant taste or smell
Less common side effects include:
Headache
Sore throat
Nasal ulceration (rare)
Very rare effects (usually with long-term or high-dose use) include:
Effects on the adrenal glands
Growth suppression in children
These effects are unlikely at recommended doses. Nevertheless, stop using the spray and seek medical advice if you notice persistent nosebleeds, severe irritation, pain, or any visual disturbance.
When can I expect to see results?
Beconase does not work immediately. Instead, it usually works best when you use it regularly.
Some improvement may appear within a few hours to a couple of days.
Full benefit usually takes several days and may take up to 1–2 weeks.
For the best results, continue to use it every day during the allergy period, even when your symptoms start to improve.
How should I use Beconase?
Always follow the instructions on the pack or the advice given by your pharmacist or doctor.
Typical dose (adults and children aged 6 years and over):
One spray into each nostril twice daily, or
Two sprays into each nostril once daily
Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Step-by-step instructions
First, gently blow your nose.
Then, shake the bottle well.
Next, insert the nozzle into one nostril.
While you breathe in gently, spray once.
After that, repeat the step for the other nostril.
Finally, wipe the nozzle and replace the cap after use.
Who should not use Beconase?
Do not use Beconase if:
You are allergic to beclometasone dipropionate or any of the ingredients.
You have an untreated nasal infection.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using Beconase if you:
Have had recent nasal surgery or injury
Have repeated nosebleeds
Have glaucoma or cataracts
Are taking other steroid medicines
Are pregnant or breastfeeding – only use if advised and if the expected benefit outweighs the risk
Age restrictions
Beconase is licensed for adults and children aged 6 years and over.
It is not recommended for children under 6 years.
Children should use the lowest effective dose and for the shortest time necessary.
How should I store Beconase?

Always keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
Store the spray at room temperature.
Do not use it after the expiry date on the pack.
