Infected insect bite treatment on the NHS Pharmacy First service

What is an infected insect bite?

Most insect bites and stings cause a mild reaction - some redness, swelling and itching - that settles on its own. Sometimes, though, a bite can become infected, especially if it has been scratched or the skin is broken.

Signs that a bite may be infected include:

• Increasing redness, swelling or warmth around the bite
• Pus or discharge from the bite
• Pain or tenderness that gets worse over time
• A fever or feeling generally unwell
• Swollen glands near the affected area

Who the infected-bite service is for

Our pharmacist can assess you under NHS Pharmacy First if:

• You or your child are aged 1 or over
• There are signs of a localised infection
• The infection is not severe or spreading widely

Simple self-care - avoiding scratching, keeping the area clean, and using a cold compress - can also help a bite settle.

When to seek urgent help instead

Call 999 immediately if there are signs of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), such as swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, a rapid heartbeat, or collapse.

Contact NHS 111 or go to A and E if:

• The infection is spreading rapidly with a high fever
• There are signs of severe or spreading cellulitis

You do not need a GP referral - just contact us:

• A GPhC-registered pharmacist will assess the symptoms and check eligibility
• Where it is clinically appropriate, we supply treatment under NHS arrangements; otherwise we give clear self-care advice
• If the service is not suitable, we will refer you to your GP, NHS 111 or urgent care

We aim to review consultations on the same day during opening hours.
