Our prescribers use current UK guidelines and destination-specific risk data to make this assessment — please give as much detail as possible in your consultation.

Jet lag affects sleep, alertness and wellbeing on long-haul trips, particularly when crossing five or more time zones. Prescription-strength options can help shift your circadian rhythm more effectively than over-the-counter products alone. Motion sickness ranges from mild discomfort to severe nausea that ruins a journey — if over-the-counter remedies have not worked for you in the past, a prescriber can assess stronger options.

Plan ahead — timing matters for travel medicine

Some antimalarials need to be started before you arrive in the risk area — in some cases a week or more in advance. Leave enough time for your consultation to be reviewed, your prescription dispensed, and your treatment to arrive before your departure date. We recommend consulting at least two to three weeks before travel, and earlier for complex itineraries.

Travel health goes beyond tablets. Our prescribers may note other precautions relevant to your destination in their consultation notes, but for comprehensive travel-health advice including vaccinations — which are not part of our online clinic — please also consult a travel-health nurse or your GP practice well ahead of your trip.

When to see a travel health clinic or your GP instead

If you are travelling while pregnant, immunocompromised, or with a complex medical history, an in-person travel-health consultation is the safer approach. Similarly, if you need a full suite of travel vaccinations alongside medication, a dedicated travel-health clinic can handle everything in one visit.

If you return from a malaria-risk area and develop a fever — even weeks later — seek medical attention urgently and tell the doctor where you have been. Malaria can be life-threatening and can present long after return. Call NHS 111 or go to A&E; do not wait for a GP appointment. Call 999 if you are severely unwell.
