What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) means finding it hard to get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. It is extremely common — most men experience it at some point, and it becomes more likely with age — so if it is happening to you, you are far from alone, and there is usually something that helps.

Psychological causes — stress, anxiety, low mood or relationship worries — are more common in younger men and can affect anyone. Lifestyle matters too: smoking, heavy drinking, carrying extra weight and doing little exercise all make ED more likely.

Because ED can be an early sign of a circulation or heart problem, it is always worth understanding the cause rather than only masking the symptom — which is exactly what the consultation is designed to do.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

For most men, ED responds well to treatment. The usual first step is a short course of tablets that relax the blood vessels and improve blood flow, taken before sex or, for some men, taken regularly. Alongside this, tackling the underlying cause — better-controlled blood pressure or diabetes, stopping smoking, cutting back on alcohol, losing some weight, or getting support for stress — often makes a real difference on its own.
