Skin conditions that respond to the right prescription care

Skin conditions are among the most undertreated in primary care. Eczema managed on over-the-counter cream alone, acne left to run its course, fungal nail infections ignored for years — prescription treatment often works far better than what is available on the shelf, and the difference to a person's confidence and comfort can be significant.

NewGen Pharmacy's online skin clinic is reviewed by our GPhC-registered clinical team, the same team that dispenses prescriptions for our NHS patients in Stratford. Conditions are assessed by a UK prescriber; treatment is only supplied when it is clinically appropriate for your skin type, your health history and any other treatment you use.

What our skin and nail clinic covers

If you are not sure what your skin condition is, online skin diagnosis is the place to start — submit a description and images and a clinician will advise on the likely diagnosis and next steps. For confirmed conditions, we treat persistent acne (including moderate to severe cases that have not responded to over-the-counter products), eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis, and rosacea.

For infections, we treat cold sores and labial herpes, fungal nail infections and fungal skin infections including athlete's foot and ringworm. Prescription treatments for these conditions work at a different level to pharmacy-only products — our prescribers match the right treatment to your specific presentation.

How online skin consultations work

The consultation asks about your skin condition, how long you have had it, what you have tried already, and your general health. For some conditions, photos of the affected area are helpful and you will be prompted to upload them. A UK prescriber reviews everything and, where appropriate, issues a prescription that our pharmacy dispenses.

Skin treatment is often iterative — the first prescription may need adjustment over time. Our prescribers can review progress and update your treatment as part of an ongoing care relationship. If your condition falls outside the scope of online care, we will say so and refer you to your GP or a dermatologist as appropriate.

When to see your GP or a dermatologist instead

A new skin lesion — particularly one that has changed in size, shape or colour, or that bleeds without injury — should be seen in person by a GP or dermatologist before any prescription treatment is considered. Moles and suspicious lesions are outside the scope of our online service.

Widespread, rapidly spreading or severely infected skin conditions should be seen in person, as should any skin condition accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fever, joint swelling or significant unwell feeling. For urgent advice, call NHS 111. If you have a severe allergic skin reaction — widespread hives, swelling, difficulty breathing — call 999 immediately.
