Is prescription weight management right for you?

Prescription weight management support is intended for adults who meet specific clinical criteria — not for cosmetic or minor weight change. UK guidelines are clear that prescription treatment is appropriate when your BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above if you also have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Starting below those thresholds is not clinically appropriate, and it is not something our prescribers will do.

If you are unsure whether you meet the criteria, the eligibility section of our consultation will walk you through the relevant questions. If you do not qualify for prescription support at this time, we will let you know clearly and signpost you to NHS weight management services and lifestyle resources that may help.

How prescription weight management works

Prescription weight management treatment works alongside — not instead of — changes to diet and physical activity. Treatments in this category work through the body to reduce appetite or the amount of energy absorbed from food, and they are only appropriate under ongoing clinical supervision. They are not a permanent fix on their own; the lifestyle changes you make during treatment are what make the results last.

Because the evidence base and safety profile for treatments in this area continue to develop, the prescriber reviews each application individually. Treatment type, dose and duration are clinical decisions made after reviewing your full health history. Treatment starts from £98.00 per month — including a needle-free once-daily tablet option — and the exact option, dose and price for you are confirmed inside the consultation once eligibility has been confirmed.

What happens during the NewGen weight management consultation

The consultation has three parts: eligibility screening (height, weight, BMI and relevant health conditions), a health and safety questionnaire (current medicines, any history of relevant health conditions), and your consent. A UK prescriber reviews every completed consultation before any treatment decision is made.

If you are eligible and treatment is appropriate, the prescriber will confirm the suitable option and our pharmacy will dispense it and arrange delivery. If you are not eligible, or if treatment would not be safe for you, the prescriber will explain why and suggest appropriate next steps — such as a referral to your GP or an NHS weight management programme.

How the consultation works — step by step

You will begin by entering your height and weight so we can calculate your BMI, then confirm whether you have a relevant weight-related health condition. If you do not meet the BMI threshold, the consultation ends there with clear guidance on where to go next.

If you do meet the threshold, you will be asked about your health history — including any history of eating disorders, current pregnancy or breastfeeding, thyroid or pancreas conditions, and any medicines you currently take. This allows the prescriber to identify any contraindications before reviewing your case.

When to see your GP instead of using an online service

An online weight management consultation is suited to adults who meet the clinical BMI threshold and are otherwise in stable health. You should see your GP first if you have a history of eating disorders, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have a condition affecting your thyroid or pancreas, if you take medicines that may interact with weight management treatments, or if you are unsure about any aspect of your health. Your GP can arrange a thorough in-person assessment and, where appropriate, referral to an NHS specialist or a supervised Tier 3 or Tier 4 weight management service.
