What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It is the most commonly diagnosed STI in England — particularly in people under 25 — and in the great majority of cases it causes no symptoms at all, which is why regular testing matters so much.

When symptoms do occur they can include unusual discharge, a burning sensation when urinating, or discomfort in the pelvic area. In people with a uterus, untreated chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and, in time, affect fertility. In people with testes, it can lead to discomfort in the testicles. None of this is inevitable — treatment works well and is straightforward.

How is chlamydia diagnosed?

Chlamydia is diagnosed by a laboratory test on a urine sample or a self-taken swab. You can test at a sexual health clinic (free on the NHS), through a home test kit posted to you, or as part of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme if you are under 25. An online prescription service can only treat a confirmed diagnosis — if you have not yet tested, please order a test kit first or visit your local clinic.

How is chlamydia treated?

Chlamydia responds reliably to a short course of antibiotics. UK guidelines recommend one antibiotic as the preferred first-line treatment; a different antibiotic is sometimes used instead — for instance if you are pregnant or have an allergy. Your prescriber will choose the most appropriate option based on the information you provide. Treatment takes just a few days, and most people clear the infection completely.

You should not have sex — including with a condom — until you and any partners have completed treatment and any re-test confirms the infection has gone. This is important to avoid passing it on or being re-infected.

When to go to a sexual health clinic instead

Please attend a sexual health clinic directly if you have symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease (severe pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex), if you are pregnant, if you have had a previous failed treatment, or if you have any concerns that need physical examination. Your local NHS clinic provides free, confidential assessment and treatment with no referral needed.
