What is testosterone deficiency?

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, responsible for muscle mass, bone density, libido, energy levels, mood and sperm production. Levels decline naturally with age — typically from the mid-thirties onward — but in some men they fall low enough to cause symptoms that significantly affect wellbeing. This is called hypogonadism or testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS).

Symptoms can include persistent fatigue, reduced sex drive, difficulty maintaining erections, low mood or depression, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, poor concentration and reduced bone density. These symptoms overlap with many other conditions, which is why a blood test is essential before attributing them to low testosterone — and why self-diagnosis is unreliable.

What is testosterone replacement therapy?

TRT involves replacing the testosterone your body is not producing in sufficient amounts, using a treatment form that your prescriber selects based on your blood results, symptoms and lifestyle. Treatment must be supervised — doses are adjusted over time, and regular follow-up blood tests are needed to check that levels are in the right range and that treatment is not causing unwanted effects.

TRT is a prescription-only treatment and it is not appropriate for men with normal testosterone levels. It is also not right for men who want to preserve their fertility in the short term, as it can reduce sperm production. The prescriber takes all of this into account during assessment.

How the online TRT assessment works

Because TRT requires blood test confirmation, this consultation is for men who already have a recent blood test (within the last three months) showing low testosterone. You will need to share your testosterone level (total testosterone, and ideally LH, FSH and SHBG if available) with the prescriber during the consultation.

The prescriber reviews your results, your symptoms, your general health and any contraindications before deciding whether to prescribe. If your results are borderline, or if the prescriber needs more information, they may request additional tests or refer you to your GP or an endocrinologist. We will always tell you clearly what the next step is.

If you do not yet have a blood test, please see your GP to request one, or contact us — we can signpost you to a private blood test service if that is more convenient. We do not prescribe TRT without current test results. That is a patient safety boundary we hold firmly.

When to see your GP or a specialist instead

See your GP first if you have not yet had a blood test confirming low testosterone, if you have a history of prostate cancer or breast cancer, if you are trying to conceive, or if you have had a heart attack or stroke in the last six months. An endocrinologist referral may be appropriate for complex cases. If we cannot safely manage your situation online, we will say so — no treatment will be supplied if the assessment is incomplete.
