Why get tested for STIs?

Sexually transmitted infections are very common in the UK and most people who have one have no idea — there are no symptoms, no discomfort, nothing to notice. The only reliable way to find out is to test. Left untreated, many STIs can lead to longer-term health problems, so catching them early really matters.

Testing is also a considerate act toward any partner. If you have had unprotected sex, changed partners, or simply have not tested in a while, ordering a kit is a straightforward and responsible step.

How do home STI test kits work?

Your kit arrives in plain, unmarked packaging — nothing on the outside indicates what is inside. Inside you will find everything you need: a sample collection guide, the collection device (a swab, urine pot, or finger-prick card depending on the kit), a pre-paid return envelope, and a reference number you use to collect your result online.

You take your sample at home, at a time that suits you, then post it back to our UKAS-accredited laboratory. Results are typically ready within two to three working days of the lab receiving your sample, and you will be notified by a secure message.

What does the kit test for?

We offer different kits depending on your needs and anatomy. The most common tests cover chlamydia and gonorrhoea — the two most frequently diagnosed bacterial STIs in England. A more comprehensive panel extends to syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B and C. Our team can help you choose the most appropriate option when you answer a few short questions about your recent sexual history and any symptoms you have noticed.

Testing for one infection does not rule out others, which is why broader panels are often recommended after higher-risk exposure.

What happens if my result is positive?

A positive result is not a disaster — it is information, and most common STIs are straightforward to treat. If your result comes back positive, our clinical team will contact you to discuss next steps. For infections that can be treated with prescription medicine, you may be able to start treatment quickly through this online service. In some cases, you will be referred to your local sexual health clinic for confirmation testing or more specialist care.

It is worth letting any recent sexual partners know so they can get tested too. Your result is entirely confidential — we will never contact anyone on your behalf.

How the consultation works

When to visit a sexual health clinic instead

A home test kit is ideal for routine, symptom-free screening. Please attend a sexual health clinic or call NHS 111 if you have symptoms such as unusual discharge, sores, blisters, pain on urination, or pelvic pain — or if you think you may need emergency HIV medication (PEP) after recent unprotected sex. Same-day and walk-in appointments are available at most NHS sexual health clinics at no cost.
