What is insomnia?

Insomnia means difficulty getting enough good-quality sleep. It might mean lying awake for a long time before falling asleep, waking up several times through the night, waking very early in the morning and being unable to get back to sleep, or feeling as though you have not rested even after a full night in bed. Often it is a combination of these.

Short-term insomnia — lasting a few days to a few weeks — is usually linked to a specific stressor: a busy period at work, a relationship difficulty, a bereavement, an illness, or simply a disrupted routine such as shift work or travel. It often resolves on its own. When it persists for three months or more it is considered chronic insomnia, which usually benefits from more structured support.

What causes insomnia?

Sleep is sensitive to many things at once. Psychological factors — anxiety, stress, depression, habit-formed worry about not sleeping — are among the most common drivers. Physical factors include pain, breathing difficulties, hormonal changes (including those around the menopause), and the stimulant effects of caffeine or certain medicines. Lifestyle patterns such as irregular sleep and wake times, excessive screen use in the evening, and alcohol (which disrupts sleep architecture even though it may help you fall asleep initially) all play a role.

How is short-term insomnia treated?

The best foundation for better sleep is behavioural: consistent sleep and wake times, a cool and dark bedroom, avoiding screens and stimulants in the hour before bed, and getting out of bed if you are lying awake for more than 20 minutes rather than building an association between bed and wakefulness. For persistent cases, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the evidence-based treatment of choice and can be accessed through your GP or NHS Talking Therapies.

Short-term prescription sleep support may be appropriate to help break the cycle while these habits are being established. We do not list specific medicines on this page — which option is appropriate, and for how long, is a clinical decision made by the prescriber inside the consultation.

Treating insomnia with NewGen

NewGen Pharmacy is a GPhC-registered community pharmacy at 245 High Street, Stratford, and our online clinic is run by the same registered team. You complete a private, structured questionnaire, a UK prescriber reviews your answers, and if short-term sleep support is suitable your order is dispensed and delivered in plain packaging. Prescription sleep aids are supplied for short courses only and are not intended for long-term use.

How the online consultation works for insomnia

The consultation covers how long you have had difficulty sleeping, your sleep pattern, your general health and mental wellbeing, and any other medicines you take. Because prescription sleep support carries some risks — including dependency with extended use — the prescriber will assess carefully whether a short course is appropriate for your specific situation.

When to see your GP instead

An online insomnia consultation is suitable for adults with recent-onset sleep difficulties in otherwise good health. See your GP if poor sleep has persisted for many months, if it is accompanied by significant anxiety or low mood, if you think you may have sleep apnoea (snoring, gasping, excessive daytime sleepiness), or if you have already tried prescription sleep medication before without success. Your GP can refer you to talking therapy or specialist sleep services if needed.

Urgent symptoms need urgent care. If poor sleep is accompanied by prolonged low mood, thoughts of harming yourself, or you feel unsafe, please call NHS 111 or the Samaritans (116 123, free, 24/7) — or in an emergency call 999. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Insomnia questions, answered

Are prescription sleep tablets addictive?
Some sleep medicines carry a risk of dependency with prolonged use, which is why they are prescribed only for short courses and not intended as a long-term solution. The prescriber will discuss this with you and will not approve an open-ended supply.
Can I take sleep tablets with alcohol?
No. Combining prescription sleep medication with alcohol can cause dangerous sedation. You must not drink alcohol while taking sleep medication.
How long will a prescription course last?
Short-term sleep support is typically prescribed for one to two weeks. The prescriber will advise on the appropriate duration for you based on your history.
Is the consultation completely private?
Yes. Your answers are stored securely in the UK and seen only by the clinical team reviewing your consultation. Nothing on the packaging indicates what is inside.
What if the tablets make me feel drowsy the next morning?
Some sleep medicines can cause next-day drowsiness, particularly at the start of treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how a new medicine affects you. If daytime drowsiness is significant, contact us — the prescriber may adjust your dose.
Are there non-prescription options I should try first?
Yes — good sleep habits (sleep hygiene) and, where available, CBT-I are the first-line approaches and can be very effective. The consultation asks about these so the prescriber can give balanced advice alongside any prescription decision.
