Why do eyelashes become thin or short?

Eyelashes grow in cycles — a growth phase, a transitional phase, and a resting phase before the hair sheds naturally. When the growth phase shortens or fewer follicles are active at once, lashes appear thinner, shorter, or less dense. This can happen with age, after medical treatments (such as chemotherapy), with certain skin or thyroid conditions, because of habitual rubbing, or simply as a natural variation in follicle activity. For many women there is no specific medical cause.

How does a prescription eyelash growth treatment work?

A prescription topical solution is applied to the skin at the base of the upper eyelashes each night. It works by extending the active growth phase of the eyelash follicle, so more hairs are growing at any one time and for longer — the result is lashes that appear longer, thicker, and darker over weeks of consistent use.

We do not publish the name of the medicine or its price on this page. The prescriber confirms the appropriate treatment for you inside the consultation, once they have checked your suitability. Results vary between individuals, and the improvement is maintained only while you continue using the treatment.

How the online consultation works for eyelash growth

The consultation is short. You will describe your concern, confirm a few health points — including eye conditions, contact lens use, and pregnancy status — and list any medicines you take. A UK prescriber reviews your answers. If treatment is appropriate, it is dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy in Stratford and delivered discreetly to you.

Treating eyelash thinning with NewGen

NewGen Pharmacy is a real NHS community pharmacy with a clinician-reviewed online service. Eyelash growth treatment is a genuine prescription medicine that needs proper assessment — which is exactly what you get here. No beauty-counter promises, no unregulated products: a prescription reviewed by a UK clinician, dispensed by a registered UK pharmacy.

When to see your GP instead

See your GP if your lash loss is sudden, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms, if you have an active eye condition or recent eye surgery, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If the prescriber identifies any reason this treatment may not be safe for you, they will explain clearly and point you to the right care.

Urgent symptoms need urgent care. If you notice sudden or significant eyelash or eyebrow loss alongside other symptoms — skin changes, fatigue, or hair loss elsewhere — speak to your GP. Generalised hair loss can occasionally have an underlying medical cause worth investigating before pursuing a topical solution.

Eyelash growth questions, answered

How long does it take to see results?
Most people notice a visible improvement in lash length and density after 8 to 12 weeks of nightly use. The full effect is typically seen at 16 weeks. Consistency matters — missing applications slows progress.
What happens if I stop using it?
Lashes gradually return to their natural state over several weeks after stopping treatment. The effect is not permanent, so continued use is needed to maintain results.
Can I use it if I wear contact lenses?
You should remove contact lenses before applying the treatment and wait 15 minutes before reinserting them. This is one of the reasons the prescriber checks lens use in the consultation.
Are there any common side effects?
Some people experience mild eye redness or skin darkening at the lash line, particularly early on. The prescriber will discuss the full side-effect profile with you inside the consultation and advise on what to monitor.
Is this suitable if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. This treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The consultation will screen for this and refer you if needed.
