What is ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma urealyticum is a type of very small bacteria that commonly lives in the urinary and genital tract without causing any problems. It is neither a conventional STI nor a normal part of the body's flora — it occupies a middle ground, often found incidentally when testing for other infections.

In some people — particularly those with symptoms of urethritis (irritation, discharge, or discomfort when urinating) or in the context of unexplained fertility difficulties — treatment may be recommended. UK guidelines are still evolving in this area, which is why a prescriber review is important before treatment is started.

How is ureaplasma treated?

When treatment is indicated, a short course of antibiotics is prescribed. UK guidelines recommend one antibiotic class as the first line, with an alternative used if the first is not suitable or has not worked. It is important that any sexual partner is treated at the same time, otherwise re-infection is likely even if the original course is successful.

Do both partners need treating?

Yes, in almost all cases. Ureaplasma passes easily between sexual partners, and treating only one person typically leads to re-infection once intercourse resumes. Both partners should complete treatment and ideally abstain from sex until a follow-up test confirms the infection has cleared. Most sexual health clinics can test and treat ureaplasma on the same visit.
