Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacteria that can cause urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease if left untreated. Because it is prone to developing antibiotic resistance, treatment requires a specific combination antibiotic course reviewed by a prescriber. If you have a confirmed positive result, our clinical team can help.
Answer a few simple questions — a UK prescriber, not an algorithm, reviews your answers and only approves treatment that is safe and suitable for you. The questionnaire opens full-screen so you can focus; you can save and finish later at any point.
Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a sexually transmitted bacteria that infects the urethra, cervix, and sometimes the reproductive organs. Like many STIs, it very often causes no symptoms — but in some people it leads to urethritis (irritation and discharge in men), cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix in women), or, in more serious cases, pelvic inflammatory disease.
MG is important to diagnose and treat correctly because it can develop resistance to antibiotics, particularly if an incomplete or inappropriate course is taken. This is why UK guidelines recommend a specific antibiotic combination and, ideally, a test-of-cure after treatment.
UK sexual health guidelines recommend a combination antibiotic approach for MG. This typically involves two different antibiotics — one taken over several days and another added to address resistance. Your prescriber will issue the appropriate combination based on your situation and whether any resistance testing has been carried out. It is essential to complete the full course as prescribed.
Both sexual partners need treating at the same time. A test-of-cure (retesting several weeks after completing treatment) is recommended to confirm the infection has cleared.
Complete a confidential consultation confirming your positive test result and health details. A UK prescriber reviews your answers and issues the appropriate antibiotic combination if it is safe to do so. Your treatment arrives in plain, discreet packaging. Treatment of MG is a clinical decision that requires a prescriber — there are no suitable over-the-counter options.
You will be asked to confirm your positive test result, any previous treatment, whether resistance testing has been performed, and your allergy and medicines history. If resistance testing shows a specific resistance pattern, your prescriber may need to issue a different combination. The consultation is confidential and reviewed before any prescription is issued.
Please attend a sexual health clinic if you have pelvic symptoms or fever, if this is a treatment failure after a previous MG course, if resistance testing has shown a specific resistance pattern that limits antibiotic options, or if you are pregnant. Clinics that specialise in sexual health are best placed to manage complex MG cases.
Urgent symptoms need urgent care. If you have pelvic pain, fever, or symptoms suggesting pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), please attend a sexual health clinic urgently rather than waiting for an online consultation. Call NHS 111 if you are unable to attend a clinic promptly.
