What is motion sickness?
Motion sickness happens when your brain receives conflicting signals from your eyes, inner ear and body about whether you are moving. In a car, your inner ear senses movement, but if you are looking at a book or screen your eyes say otherwise. The same conflict arises on boats, planes and coaches. The result — nausea, cold sweats, dizziness, vomiting — can range from mild to completely incapacitating.
Some people are far more susceptible than others. It tends to affect women more than men, is more common in children, and often diminishes as people age — but for those who experience it, the anticipatory anxiety alone can make travel stressful. Treatment taken before the journey begins can prevent symptoms from starting in the first place.
How is motion sickness treated?
The most effective approach is prevention: taking treatment before you travel, not after symptoms have started. For shorter journeys a tablet taken an hour or two before departure can provide several hours of protection. For longer journeys — a multi-day sea voyage, for example — a small adhesive patch worn behind the ear provides more sustained coverage over a day or two without the need to remember repeated doses.
Non-medicine strategies can also help: sitting in the front of a car, fixing your gaze on the horizon, getting fresh air, avoiding reading on the move, and eating lightly before travel. These work well alongside treatment for most people.

When to see your GP instead

See your GP if you have severe or persistent vertigo unrelated to travel, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine (which some motion sickness medicines can worsen), or if the prescriber determines that your health history makes treatment unsuitable online. We will always explain clearly if we cannot help and point you to the right care.
Urgent symptoms need urgent care. If you experience sudden severe dizziness, a spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in the ears or hearing loss that is not related to travel, please see your GP — these can be signs of an inner-ear condition that is separate from motion sickness and needs assessment.
